Protesters gathered outside the Tarrant County Courthouse on Saturday during a We Won’t Go Back protest in Fort Worth.

On Friday, the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade, a precedent that lasted more than 50 years. This will lead to a trigger law in Texas taking effect in 30 days, where doctors could face life sentences and $100,000 charges if they were to perform an abortion.

Event organizer Zoe Seymore said she created an accessible place for individuals to vent their anger and frustration in hopes of encouraging change.

“It affects more than just choosing to have an abortion, it’s about my body,” said Houston resident Kimberly Vinson, 20. “It’s about our choices to do what we want with our bodies.”

Shawn Chisholm, executive director of the British Columbia Federation of Independent Schools Associations, recently spoke to graduates of St. John Brebeuf High School in Abbotsford. In addition to offering his advice to graduates, he shared a few words with their parents on the importance of choice in education and the value of a Catholic education. Here is an edited excerpt of his remarks.

In my current role at FISA, I serve the diverse population of more than 320 independent schools in British Columbia – as an advocate for choice in K-12 education, legitimate funding and recognition as a sector full-fledged BC K-12 system. Access to education and choice in education are fundamental human rights and are identified in Article 26 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states: Parents have a priority right to choose the kind of education to be given to their children.

Shawn Chisholm addresses graduates and parents. (St. John Brebeuf Secondary)

I wish I could provide the level of recognition that parents who choose to send their children to an independent school deserve. This day is also a celebration of your choice – which allowed your child to reach this milestone. The alternative to independent school education is public school education – and this option is free, because as a society we recognize education as a liberating force with a strong contribution to the public good.

Tonight, as graduating parents, you celebrate the graduation of your children from K-12 and look forward to what awaits them. You also probably realize that you will no longer pay school fees, pack countless lunches, make sure your child brings their homework/mask/gym band to school, fight for a spot in the parking lot, attend parent/teacher interviews, participating in fundraisers and signing endless releases.

As a parent of children who attended a Catholic school, I must warn you that in the future you may also find it difficult, as I did, to realize that regular connection with classmates and your child’s teachers you will miss, and the times you witnessed your children’s performances – whether on a stage, gymnasium or playground.

As parents of these beautiful graduating students, you exercised your choice and chose a Catholic education because it was a gift you wanted your child to experience. Your choice demonstrates your commitment and investment in something of great value – a faith-based Catholic education.

There are no guarantees once you legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide, says one reader. (Adobe)

Legal euthanasia and assisted suicide usually begin with terminal illnesses. Then to reasonably foreseeable death, then to not reasonably foreseeable death, followed by disabilities, disabled children, dementia and mental illness.

Once you legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide, it just keeps expanding and expanding and never ends. The number of Canadians receiving euthanasia and assisted suicide has increased every year since its introduction because they keep expanding it. There are no guarantees once you legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Re “Discoveries” of Residential Schools: Verdict of Public Opinion,” May 30, by Father Jack Gallagher:

The residential school system was created to destroy Aboriginal culture and nearly succeeded in doing so. Pope Francis recently apologized for the role of the Catholic Church in this destruction.

If the boarding school teachers were somehow like most of the nuns and brothers who taught me in the 1960s, these little kids didn’t stand a chance.

Father Gallagher’s article merely rearranges the deck chairs of a doomed ship.

Kaylynn Sullivan TwoTrees lives in Hinesburg. She is 77 years old and has lived a life at the crossroads of identities, cultures and worldviews – she has indigenous, African and European ancestry.

TwoTrees works in multiple mediums including multi-sensory installations with sound, smell and visuals. Although she describes herself as a multimedia artist, she prefers the term “maker”.

“If you live in a room with two things, I’m going to do something else with it, and I think I’ve been doing that since I was about 7,” she said. “I’ve been doing art since the 1970s.”

Vermont was unexpected for Kaylynn Sullivan TwoTrees. She arrived in 2008 but moved back and forth between California, New Mexico and Vermont before settling in Green Mountain State in 2012.

“I am a desert rat. I love the desert and the big sky,” she said. “But I found myself coming back here, because I had started to build deep, deep relationships with the people here. And so it was on one of these trips here that a friend told me taken to a piece of forest here. And in this forest, I was told that I had to come here, and that there was work to be done. And there was work to be done with this piece of earth in particular.

The land in question was a tract of forest at Shelburne Farms. And it inspired Kaylynn’s first major art installation in Vermont, called “earth and local”.

“And what it was was an exploration of the conflicting and sometimes immeasurable histories of the peoples of this place,” she said. “The history of the Abenaki – their own history, not the history, the history of the colonizers, but their own history – the black farmers here in Hinesburg, where I now live, and their history here, and the history of other settlers who came later. And the story of the visitors, and the story of the…black communities that were here over time, especially in Winooski and Malletts Bay.

This photograph, part of the ‘Of Land and Local’ exhibit, shows a portrait of Kaylynn Sullivan TwoTrees’ maternal great-great-grandparents and great-grandmother.

It wasn’t just an exhibition that brought together land and history, but almost a way of stretching the audience both to imagine and to be locked into what a specific landscape looks like given everything they’ve seen or experienced. .

Think of a place that you remember from your childhood. Maybe a schoolyard or a backyard. If you were to think of all the sounds that came together in this space, what would it look like?

“The room had like an old stone wall made out of waxed bee cloth, which had the sound of old Vermont stories, like Green-Mountain-Boy,” Kaylynn said. “Further along, there were these trees standing there like saplings in fabric. It was the sound of some of the findings from the eugenics program. And then further along, there was an old tree stump with the sound of part of the story of the black farmers. And then, at the very bottom, there was a grandmother tree carved out of fabric that told the story of the lake, of Pitawbagw, the Abenaki story of the lake.

Kaylynn says it was all happening at the same time.

“So when you got close to the sculpture that was making that sound, you could hear it very clearly,” she said. “But everything else was a bit of a dissonance on the pitch. But there was a place in the middle of the room, that if you stood there, you could hear them all, like a choir.

More from Brave Little State: Remembering Vermont’s 19th Century Black Communities

For Kaylynn, the purpose of this piece and all the other works stems from wanting to invoke, provoke and evoke.

“It has always been important to me to invoke the ancestors and all life and the universe, in the space that I work or in the work that I do, so that I become a vessel for the work to come. , ” she says. “So this invocation is the first piece of any piece. So invoke the place from which it comes, the source of the creative impulse, which is the source of all life.

Then, she says, it’s essential to evoke a response in the viewer.

“It’s not very interesting for me to create work that can be passively consumed,” Kaylynn said. “More to try to trigger memories or trigger connections, trigger some sort of deep, deep, deep DNA memory, or to evoke an emotional response, a connection, the beginnings of a relationship, the beginnings of remembering a relationship in the spectator or in the participants.

And then comes the provocation.

“I find there’s something about being outside the parameters of things — I see myself as a borderline person,” she said. “I used to think of myself as a person at a crossroads, but I actually think I kind of navigate the frontier and have done that for most of my life. By doing this, there is something that I provoke. I provoke a conversation. I provoke a reflection, a surprise in the spectator – and in myself sometimes.

Kaylynn Sullivan TwoTree’s latest work is “Falling Into Language”, which includes film, sound and images.

Kaylynn’s latest work is titled “fall into language.” The multimedia exhibition includes films, sounds and images.

“Well, I’m 70 now, so I’m thinking of leaving. What does it mean to leave? What does it mean to leave clean?” Kaylynn said. this starting time, when we are closer to the exit than to the entry?

She says this project started with automatic writing.

“I created this secret language that was just a form, but…it almost looked like you could read it,” she said. “And just playing with time and hanging it on the walls, lots and lots of it everywhere. And then I started painting on it and thinking about how language connects us and separates us.”

Kaylynn said something happens when you learn another language – you learn new ways of looking at things.

Kaylynn Sullivan’s latest TwoTrees exhibit, “Falling Into Language,” began with automatic writing and a secret language of shapes.

“I heard the story of a village in southern India, where they have a ceremony that they have been doing for 4,500 years: they sing these songs that have been transmitted by men, and no linguist was able to relate these songs to any human language,” she said. “And the closest they could find was the language of birds. It made me start thinking more about language. Was there – or when was it the time when we spoke with the animals? When was it the time when we all spoke the same language? which language ? And what was this world, and what was the communication?

“Falling Into Language” premiered at Burlington City Arts in the summer and fall of last year. I visited during this time, and the first thing that surprised me in a dimly lit hallway was the description leading up to the exhibit. Inside was a fragment of a story that Kaylynn borrowed from “She Unnames Them” by Ursula K. Le Guin, which reads:

“Eve longs to return to a primordial sea. And misunderstandings caused by words, no longer stand between her and the rest of creation. So she anonymized all animals, from sea otters to bees, when she was done , she marvels at how much closer they feel than when their names had stood between me and them as a barrier.

Upon entering the exhibition space, I saw the paintings hanging on the wall. My eyes wanted to try to read some of the bits of language I encountered. The space itself was immersed in sound, which Kaylynn described as “lively sung” tracks.

“Maybe language as we understand it now is something that’s decentralization rather than evolution,” Kaylynn said. “In the native culture, there are a lot of vocables, a lot of songs that are meaningless sounds, but that have a meaning. They communicate, but they don’t have a literal meaning.

“How long do we allow ourselves to dream? How much time do we give ourselves to stop explaining and get off the beaten path of the imagination, and dream so that we can dream of a future that is not dystopian? And who has a presence here and now, so that we can live there? “

Kaylynn Sullivan TwoTrees

Another way to find meaning beyond the literal, Kaylynn says, is to dream.

“I’m so grateful for the possibilities Vermont has created in my life, I have a life here that I never imagined, in a million years I would have,” she said. “We live in times that can be considered very chaotic, uncertain and negative. There are so many projections of a dystopian future that seems to fill the airspaces, and so I think I’d like to leave people with the idea to go with the idea of dreaming.

She added: “How long do we allow ourselves to dream? How much time do we give ourselves to stop explaining and get off the beaten track by imagination, dreams, to be able to dream of a future that is not dystopian? And who has a presence here and now, so that we can live there? It’s–it seems possible. And so I cling to that possibility, with a huge sense of gratitude.

On June 23, 1972, the rain-swollen Susquehanna River overflowed and the Wyoming Valley was, in the words of a hastily prepared first edition of The Times Leader, “beset by the greatest disaster in its history. …”

The words weren’t exaggerated, as anyone who lived through Agnes’ flood and its aftermath understands.

The story has been told many times, but this time it’s different.

Just as emergency crews and volunteer sandbags worked against time as the river swelled, telling the stories of those who survived Agnes feels like a battle against time.

Because on this 50th anniversary, the number of people who remember is far fewer than when we looked back on previous years. Some of the people we would have liked to interview have unfortunately passed away.

Recording and preserving the stories of those who are still there to remember takes on new meaning as this epoch-making natural disaster recedes into the past like the muddy waters that caused it.

To do this, we have embarked on a project that combines the resources and collective memories of two long-standing local media: ours and those of WBRE TV. We collaborated on interviews with people who remember, including some of our own staff and their families.

As we tell the story, it should be noted that the two news outlets, located in downtown Wilkes-Barre, were, like so many businesses, temporarily flooded out of their offices in 1972.

Our joint 50th anniversary coverage begins with today’s preview and will continue throughout the coming week. It will include daily broadcasts on WBRE, stories in the Times Leader, and special online content from both organizations, including digitally remastered videos, photos, archival stories, and more.

We spoke with locals about their stories of survival, with community leaders who were – and are – responsible for protecting the valley from further destruction, with journalists who have covered the story, and with those who have studied the story. impact of the flood on our communities.

To monitor

• Like us, WBRE will present today the stories of the week ahead.

• Watch for their reports on the afternoon and evening news programs between Monday and the following Sunday, June 19th.

• We’ll have new stories on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week, followed by a special section in our Sunday June 19 edition. Also watch for powerful archive stories in our Monday and Tuesday e-editions this week.

• WBRE’s special Agnes webpage is https://www.pahomepage.com/agnes-at-fifty-a-look-back-at-the-flood-of-1972/

You can also access it through the QR code that appears with this story.

• The Times Leader special Agnes webpage is https://www.timesleader.com/agnes

We thank each of you who have shared your stories with us, and we thank our press partners at WBRE for their kind collaboration.

While a tragedy of this magnitude is nothing to celebrate, the many ways The Valley with a Heart rebounded is an inspiring story worth remembering.

We hope the stories we bring to you this week will be inspiring, and also something you can share with your children and grandchildren for years to come.

First reading: Gn 14, 18-20
Second reading: 1 Cor 11:23-26
Reading of the Gospel: Lk 9, 11b-17

This Sunday we honor the “Body and Blood of Christ” in the Eucharist – in Latin Corpus Christi.

This had been foreshadowed about 2,100 years earlier by the bread and wine that Melchizedek brought to Abraham, and again by the miraculous meal of the huge crowd by Jesus.

Now we have the real thing.

During the Last Supper, Jesus took bread and said: “This is my Body which is for you”; he took wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.

To the apostles, it must have reminded what Moses had said when he sprinkled the blood of the sacrifices on the people of Sinai: “This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you.

But Jesus is God the Son. His words must have in fact realized Where provoked what they meant. What still seemed to be bread and wine was therefore no longer bread and wine, but his Body and his Blood. He said it himself.

Then he added: “Do this in memory of me. To the apostles, this must have reminded them of God’s command to their ancestors at the conclusion of the old covenant: to “celebrate” their exodus from Egypt each year with “a memorial feast”.

(In fact, that was what the Last Supper was. “I have longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffered,” Jesus said.)

However, “remembrance,” “celebration,” and “memorial” do not quite mean what Jesus’ command meant to his apostles or God’s command to their ancestors.

In Hebrew the word is zikaron. The Jews speak of a zikaron of the creation, the exodus or the temple: always a thing or an event from another era, generally from the past. However, zikaron can also mean “repetition”.

A zikaron connects us across time and space to something that might otherwise be lost. Even after the memory ends, this connection remains with us and commits us to its lessons.

For example, “this is how Israel understands its liberation from Egypt”, says the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Each time Passover is celebrated, the events of the exodus are made present to the memory of believers so that they may conform their lives to them.”

In Greek, zikaron is anamnesis. However, anamnesis has no equivalent in English. “Memorial”, “remembrance” and “commemoration” all suggest a “remembrance” of the past, but anamnesis means make it present, merging the past and the present in now, as if we were living them simultaneously.

In a anamnesis, “we become mysteriously contemporaneous with the event”, says Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa: “the event is present for us and we are present at the event”.

Accordingly, we supplement “memorial” and “remembrance” with words like “re-present,” “re-actualize,” and “renew,” which focus on the presence of the event for us, or “re-live,” “participate” and “celebrate”, which emphasize our presence at the event.

I like the metaphor of my mother. The sun always shines on the earth. However, each morning, the rotation of the earth re-presents the sun to us; alternatively, we again participate in its warmth and light.

Therefore, when Jesus said, “Do this as a anamnesis of me”, He told his apostles not only to remember or imitate what he had done, but to represent it, update it and renew it so that we can relive it, celebrate it and participate in this .

And that included both his natural words and actions and his supernatural change from bread and wine into his Body and Blood.

The apostles could accomplish his natural words and actions by their own power, but not supernatural change. Jesus’ command, therefore, involved a promise that their execution of natural words and actions would bring about supernatural change.

Beyond imagination – but not beyond belief – that’s what happens at Mass. Through her liturgy, the Church makes present the Passover of Christ, says the Catechism. We participate in the Last Supper of Christ; we eat his Body and drink his Blood.

Father Hawkswell is now done teaching The Catholic faith in simple English. The entire course is available in written and YouTube form at beholdvancouver.org/catholic-faith-course, and will remain available through the end of August. The father will teach the whole course again from September.
