The Google Home smart home system and associated AI assistant aren’t just great for sending messages, setting up video calls, and similar tasks. And they’re not just great for viewing smart home security cameras. One of the most powerful features of Google Home is, in fact, that it can be used to set reminders. Whether it’s reminders to water plants, feed pets, take medicine or buy groceries, or many other things.

But using reminders, for those not intimately familiar with smart home equipment, isn’t always intuitive. Although the automation process is quite simple. So this guide will take a closer look at how to set up reminders using these systems. And how to handle the reminders you have.

Make sure your smart home is set up correctly first

Of course, before you can use your Google Home, Nest Home, and Assistant smart speakers and displays for reminders, they need to be properly set up. The process of setting up a smart home powered by Google is relatively simple. And is almost identical on all gadgets.

That said, there are also a few extra steps here. Namely, ensuring that your voice match and personal results are enabled for devices in your home. That way, when you set up Google Home and Assistant for reminders, they’ll recognize you. Allow wider use of more personalized reminders.

Of course, the same will need to be set up for anyone in your smart device-enhanced home. In case you want to set reminders for other people in your house or allow them to do so. In this segment, we will discuss this process.

Make sure voice match and personalized results are set up to receive your reminders more easily

  1. First, you’ll want to set up personalized results on any gadgets you want to have reminders for. And on all the other gadgets you might want a more personal experience
  2. Start by opening the Google Home app on your Android or iOS device
  3. Go to the “Home” tab, if not already preloaded
  4. Select the first device for which you want to enable personalized results. You will repeat steps 3-7 later for all other devices.
  5. Select the settings icon, located at the top right of the user interface
  6. In the Settings menu, choose “Recognition and Sharing”
  7. Next, scroll down to the “Personal Results” option and, if it is not enabled, enable it
  8. Then we will have to activate Voice Match. This way, Google Assistant will recognize your voice when it speaks to you on any selected device. In this way, he will be able to provide not only personalized results, but also personal services that you may have set up.
  9. Staying in the Google Home app, in the “Recognition and Sharing” menu, scroll down to Voice Match and make sure it’s turned on. Of course, you’ll need to repeat this for any other Google or Nest Home apps you want to set reminders on

As mentioned above, you should also ensure that Voice Match and personal results are enabled for any other smart home gadgets you may be using. And, as noted above, the process will also need to be in place for anyone else in your home. Or, at the very least, for anyone else who will regularly use your smart home gadgets.

Set reminders with your Google Home or via the Assistant

With your Voice Match and Personal Results settings enabled, it’s now time to set up reminders for your Google Home ecosystem. This process is quite simple, you just need to know the proper commands.

  1. With these two settings out of the box, you’ll need to use Google Assistant to set up reminders. This can be accomplished through the on-device Google Assistant for smart home gadgets. Conversely, you can also use Google Assistant on your smart home. Although it is not always so simple and sometimes requires a change of controls. Namely, to add where the reminder will be displayed or using the assistant in the Google Home app.
  2. To get started, just say “Ok, Google” or “Hey, Google” to queue the assistant. Then there are a few types of commands that can be used
    1. First of all, for reminders based on time of day or specific time, you will want to indicate this in your order. For example, you could say “remind me to call my mom at 9:00 a.m. in a week” or “tomorrow at noon.” Or, you can set a reminder that happens every day. For example, saying “remind me to water the plants at noon every day”, instead.
    2. You can also choose to set reminders for other users this way, as long as they are registered with your smart home ecosystem. In reality, user-specific callback The commands here work the same as in the example above. And they will appear for other users instead of you. For example, you could say “remind Jim to take his meds at 10:00 a.m. every day.”
    3. Finally, you can set up reminders based on location. Locations that can be used by Assistant include those saved to your account through Google Maps. But businesses, landmarks, your work or home address, etc. can be used. Some experience may be necessary. That said, the commands here are pretty straightforward as well. For example, you can say “remind me to get milk from Walmart” to receive a reminder to get milk when you arrive at the nearest Walmart to you.

Of course, variations of these phrases can also be used. For example, you can ask Google to “set a reminder for” or “remember” something instead.

Here’s how you can retrieve and manage your reminders

From now on, some reminders will be automatic. For example, whether you’re using a smart speaker, display, or smartphone, your device will remind you of the reminders you set. When it does, it will either say something or throw a notification that says “I have a reminder for” and then the name of the person who set the reminder. Or who the callback was set for.

For speakers, the speaker lights will then stay on for up to 10 minutes or until the reminder is verified. On smart displays, the screen will display a card for the reminder until it is verified. And the reminders for your phone will stay in place just as long.

However, it is also possible to see the reminders and manage them via a smart display or smartphone at the command.

  1. Again, start by saying “Hey Google” or “Ok Google”
  2. Follow this with the command “show me my reminders” or “what reminders do I have”. Similar commands will also work
  3. Google, on command, will show or notify you of your reminders
  4. To delete or cancel a reminder, after using the activation words mentioned above, just say “delete my reminder at” or “cancel my reminder at”, then repeat what the reminder was. For example, you can say “delete my reminder to call mom”, if you have already called them

Birthday reminders are automatic in Google Home, but you’ll still need things set up correctly

For the latest reminders, namely birthday reminders, you will need to do a bit of setup. If your speaker is linked to your Google account, you will simply need to have added users to your contacts. You can also add birthdays to remember for the Assistant in the Google Home app.

  1. Open the Google Home app
  2. Tap to select your profile picture at the top right of the UI
  3. Select “Assistant Settings” from the resulting menu
  4. Scroll down the page and select “Your People”
  5. You’ll be presented with the current “family contacts” that Google will allow interactions with by default. Whether it’s making phone calls, setting reminders or something else. Select the “Add a person” button at the top of the page, if the person you want to set reminders for or for whom you want reminders on birthdays is not already on the page
  6. Select a user from your contacts. You may need to go back and add a user to your contacts first if the person you want to add is not already there.
  7. Fill in the contact form for any missing information and select the “Add” button

Since 2015, Google has been using tiny radar chips. These devices haven’t had much commercial success yet, but they can do some pretty cool stuff. For example, Google’s Soli Radar can monitor your sleep patterns, control a smartwatch, and count individual sheets of paper. Now the search giant has launched Ripple, an open source API standard that could bring the technology to non-Google devices, including your automobile.

If you look at Project Ripple on Github, you might think it’s a creation of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). They are the ones who bring us CES every year. As you dig into the source code, however, you’ll see a lot of references to Google. Project contributors must sign an open source license agreement with Google to participate.

Ripple was born from the Google Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) program. Ivan Poupyrev, Director of Engineering and Head of Technical Projects for Google ATAP, recently announced the importance from Ripple’s open source API. “General purpose radar is a key emerging technology for solving critical use cases in a privacy-friendly manner,” he said.

Soli, through the Ripple API, could use radar technology to help protect your privacy. It can easily determine if someone is nearby without using a microphone or camera. The technology could also be used to understand someone’s movements, such as detecting falls or helping direct pedestrian traffic. Ripple could even activate touchless gesture controls, like when Tom Cruise’s character slides and waves across screens in Minority report.

Ford wants to use Ripple to “improve various customer experiences” far beyond its current driver assistance technologies. This functionality currently relies on advanced outdoor radars, but a standard API like Ripple could allow the automaker to develop its software independently of the bespoke radar hardware it needs to use now.

Other Ripple participants already include Blumio, Infineon, NXP, and Texas Instruments. Blumio is perhaps the most interesting of the group, as he is involved in the development of sensors that can measure blood pressure without ever touching your body.

Among smart home platforms, Apple’s HomeKit is probably my third favorite, behind Alexa and SmartThings. With HomeKit, you can create a surprising number of smart routines to make your different smart home devices work with each other, much more than with Google Home, in fact.

However, there’s a problem with Apple’s smart home platform: there just aren’t enough things that work with HomeKit. This point was highlighted with the announcement at CES 2022 of the Eve outdoor cam and the Wemo smart video doorbell. They are respectively the second outdoor video camera and the third video doorbell that work with HomeKit Secure Video. And they’re both very expensive – $ 249 each. Meanwhile, if you want one of the best video doorbells that work with Alexa, you can spend as little as $ 49.

MESA, Ariz. (KPNX) – Arizona police are looking for a serial burglar linked to 18 startling cases since October.

William Pollard, one of the most recent burglary victims, confronted the suspect with a gun outside his home. He tells his story in the hope that it will lead to an arrest.

“We work hard for what we have. He felt he could just take them, ”Pollard said. “I didn’t want this to happen to anyone else in the community.”

Pollard says he and his wife feel raped after the Dec.7 incident. At around 1:30 a.m., the Ring doorbell rang at their home in Mesa, Arizona. Pollard checked his app to see a man he didn’t know rummaging in his truck, carport, and hangar.

Pollard grabbed his gun and ran for the door.

“I had my gun, and I ordered him to put it on all fours on the ground. And so he said he had his daughter in my shed, ”Pollard said.

The statement was a lie, but Pollard began to back down. He says his multiple sclerosis then tripped him slightly, allowing the suspect to escape. He runs away with some of the couple’s belongings.

Police believe the suspect is linked to at least 18 burglaries since October. He is described as a white male in his late twenties or early thirties, between 5′10 ″ and 6 ′, with a reddish beard and distinctive tattoos on his neck and hands. Witnesses saw him run away on a bicycle.(Source: Pollard family, KPNX via CNN)

“My wallet, taking a bunch of personal items from my truck, some old knives and other items that I had hidden well in the truck, but he searched everything,” Pollard said.

Police believe the same suspect caught on the couple’s security video is linked to at least 18 break-ins as of October. Most occurred between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Six of these were residential burglaries, while 12 were vehicles.

“It upsets me that other people have also been victimized,” Pollard said.

Investigators say the suspect is a white male in his 20s or 30s, between 5′10 ″ and 6 ′, with a red beard and distinctive tattoos on his neck and hands. Witnesses saw him run away on a bicycle.

Pollard and his wife are thankful that they are well and have cameras. But they can’t help but think the suspect has targeted their 55+ community. They hope their unfortunate momentum will help catch the criminal.

“We are not easy targets. I want this guy caught. I want him to be prosecuted, ”Pollard said.

Police are asking the public to keep an eye on the suspect and to call authorities if they spot him.

It’s a whole new year, and it means new and exciting innovations in the world of smart home technology. While no one can say for sure what this year might hold for the ever-expanding industry, we can make some educated guesses based on where it’s headed right now, as well as what we know about CES 2022. until now.

Autonomy and robots

Whether we’re ready or not, it’s clear that the biggest names in the smart home world are devoting significant time and research to household robots. While the idea of a semi-intelligent robot capable of cleaning the house isn’t out of place, it can also be a bit overwhelming.

With that in mind, Amazon’s Astro will likely be more widely adopted, as will the Ring Always Home Cam. In 2020, Sunflower Labs launched The Bee, an autonomous home security drone for your backyard. Samsung’s JetBot AI + might be a robot vacuum cleaner, but its built-in home security features make it more like a home robot than many other devices on the market.

It is only a matter of time before other companies start working on products that can compete with these, especially in the home security arena. It might be a long time before a robot can dust off your dresser, but this year will undoubtedly bring us closer.

Smarter sensors

Sensors are at the heart of the smart home experience. You rely on motion sensors to trigger your security cameras, or possibly to turn on your lights. Glass break sensors are a key part of smart home security systems, and CO2 and smoke sensors are needed for every home, smart or not. The problem is, so many of these sensors are bulky or only have one purpose.

Take the Ecobee motion sensor, for example. This is a separate device which, although small, still requires positioning in the right place just to detect movement. Smarter sensors can reduce the clutter in your home and expand the functionality of smart devices. Presence sensors have a lot to do with it.

Google Nest Hub 2nd Generation tracks your sleep.
John Velasco / Digital Trends

A presence sensor can detect whether or not someone is in a room and react accordingly. Other sensor enhancements you can expect to see more of in the coming year include sleep sensors like those on the Nest Hub, a combination of motion and sound detection that monitors the quality of your sleep. this night.

Better energy efficiency and recyclability

We have already written about the problem of electronic waste facing modern society. Many components of the technology are difficult to reuse or recycle, but finding a method that reduces the amount of waste generated daily is essential.

Apple has led the charge in this regard so far, pushing for near-total recyclability of its phones and mobile devices. Google has also done a lot and aims to use recycled materials in all Made by Google products by 2022.

Expect to see more and more companies embrace the trend of using recycled materials in their products and making it easier to reuse older devices or just redeem reward points, rather than letting them end up in the nearest dumpster.

Home security

Convenience can be a driving force behind smart home technology, but an even greater force is home security. It is embedded in the very essence of the smart home. The Nest Hub Max has a built-in camera, just like the Echo Show 15. All Echo devices that work with Alexa Guard can listen to the sound of broken glass, device beeps, and more. Some security cameras can even monitor fires.

The Ring Video Doorbell can respond to visitors.

The peace of mind that comes with a powerful home security system cannot be overstated. Even if you’re not worried about someone breaking into your home, security cameras can allow you to keep tabs on your pets while you’re away during the day and keep track of what time your pets are. children come home from school or when a package is delivered to your home. porch. Smart video doorbells like the Ring can function as a type of virtual butler thanks to Alexa Smart Responses.

Health monitoring and management

As we spend more and more time at home and remote work becomes more and more part of everyday life, our smart home technology has the potential to improve our health. Sleep technology is one of the main ways to do this already, and it should continue to improve over the next year or so. Smart beds can lead to better, deeper sleep, and can even identify potential sleep disorders you weren’t aware of.

Another way that smart home technology is poised to improve your health is a little more esoteric. At CES 2021, Toto came up with the idea of a smart toilet that would analyze your poo and provide suggestions for improving your diet based on its analysis of feces. At the moment, it’s still just a concept, but ideas like this are being actively researched and will likely see further implementation throughout 2022.

A smart toilet can tell you more than you want to know.

If a smart assistant can track your sleep with its sensors, it could (theoretically, at least) judge your posture and remind you to sit up straight, tell you when to take a break from sitting on the couch, and much more. . Take a look at your house and see how many connected devices you have. We’re talking about security doorbells and cameras, smart home appliances like televisions, refrigerators, exercise equipment, even smart toys with microphones and cameras.

All of these gadgets collect data about you.

“There is a market for all of this data and technology, information about you, your network, the devices that are on your network, anything that has value and is bought and sold on the dark web”, Chris Rouland, CEO of Phosphorus Cybersecurity, noted.

Rouland added that for any device that connects to your Wi-Fi, you expose yourself to hackers.

“In the hacking world these days, it’s really a business and your baby’s webcam isn’t particularly a business, but it can be bought and sold, and there are people who like to rent with webcams and see them, ”he said. noted.

There are steps you can take to protect yourself.

“It’s important to know what’s attached to your network, and nowadays the concept of guest network is very common and most of the Wi-Fi hotspots, and so maybe you take the toys and gadgets that you don’t really care about, but need internet access to function, put them on your guest network and that way they can’t hack into your computer network that way, ”Rouland said .

Did you know you can set your smart lights to flash and change color to the beat of your favorite music? It’s definitely a fun party trick or an easy way to dance with your cat. Setting up your lights to work with music is also not as complicated as you might think. Let’s take a look at the steps needed to sync your smart lights with music.

What kind of lights sync with the music

Many smart lighting brands have added music sync as a feature. It’s a safe bet that the more popular ones have the functionality available, and if they don’t, third parties are likely to offer a solution.

Philips Hue, Nanoleaf and LIFX all added the functions directly to their apps. The mechanism they use to view music will vary, however. Hue, for example, Sign in directly to your Spotify account to sync your lights with where you are on the playback timeline. Meanwhile, Nanoleaf captures live audio through microphone or jack and processes it in real time.

How to sync Hue with Spotify

Philips Hue uses its native app to sync music with your lights. Its Sync section is also used in the PC application to project the colors on the screen to the rest of the room. Fold the audio sync so that the video and audio data is used to determine light activity. Here’s how to activate the music sync feature:

Step 1: Open the Hue app.

2nd step: Press the To sychronize navigation button.

Lifx has had some issues with their music syncing since their interface redesign. It is still there and can be used, but there are alternatives (like the ones in this article) available that may provide better results.

Step 1: Open the Effects tab in the Lifx app.
