Eve Cam as outdoor camera
In our temporary living situation, I don’t have my normal HomeKit setup, so I had to rethink which HomeKit products I want to reconfigure. I took this opportunity to completely delete my HomeKit Home setup so I could start fresh in my new home. As someone who grew up in the era of Windows XP where you reinstalled the operating system once a year, old habits are hard to break. As I was sorting through the large box of all my HomeKit products, I came across my trusty Standby Cameraand realized there was a flexible use case that I hadn’t considered until now.
Weekly HomeKit is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything related to Apple’s smart home framework.
There are a handful of HomeKit outdoor cameras that I recommend, including eufyCam, Arlo, and the Eve Cam Outdoor. If the location where you want to place a camera is difficult to reach or you don’t want to use a battery-powered option, you might consider mounting the Eve Cam indoors looking directly out of a window such as a playground. agreement between mounting on the outside and nothing at all.
If you’ve never used the Eve Cam, one thing you’ll be happy to learn is that the bottom of it is a magnet, so it can be attached/mounted to any metal object. . In my old house I used it in the garage and attached it to a metal shelf. It never fell once, even during heavy windows and a tornado in 2002.
Install Eve Cam in HomeKit
Eve is one of the best HomeKit makers in my opinion. The team believes in HomeKit and only manufactures HomeKit-enabled devices, while ignoring Google Home and Amazon Alexa. They don’t run a cloud service and really don’t want to collect your data. The Eve app for iPhone is one of the best home app alternatives and one of the only smart home apps I have installed on my iPhone.
When unpacking the Standby Camera, you just need to connect the micro-USB cable to the supplied power cable. The HomeKit code is on the bottom of the Eve Cam. I always recommend using an app like Home Pass to save a copy of your HomeKit codes. If it ever fades in the future, you’d be hard pressed to play it on HomeKit without it.
Although iOS 16 brings a complete overhaul to the Home app, the onboarding process is pretty much the same. You will scan the code, it will go through the technical process of connecting Eve Cam to your Wi-Fi, then you will choose a room to bind it to. The room decision affects future automations where you can use the motion sensor inside the Eve Cam to trigger other devices. As part of a camera integration in HomeKit, you also need to choose your recording options. HomeKit cameras have three options:
HomeKit lets you record whether you’re home or away, stream when you’re home or away, or turn it off. Many people turn off HomeKit indoor cameras when they’re home and record when they’re away; some people may stream when they are at home and only record when they are away. It entirely depends on your security concerns on which you are using. Since Eve Cam uses HomeKit Secure Video and is end-to-end encrypted, I trust the record at all times.
HomeKit Secure Video Recording
Video captured by your HomeKit is privately analyzed and encrypted (at both ends) on a home hub device (HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV) and uploaded to iCloud so only you and those you share your home environment with can see. . If you subscribe to Apple’s iCloud+, you can see the last ten days of activity from one to an unlimited number of HomeKit Secure Video cameras. The 50GB iCloud+ storage plan supports a single HomeKit camera, the 200GB iCloud+ storage options support up to five cameras, and the 2TB iCloud+ storage plan lets you use unlimited HomeKit cameras.
Eve Cam as an outdoor camera Summary
The one area where using the Eve Cam as an outdoor window-pointing camera isn’t ideal is at night; it’s not as good as using a dedicated outdoor camera with HomeKit. You can see below the quality it has. Your environment and lighting environment will vary in quality. Due to some of the limited viewing options operating through a window, I wouldn’t recommend relying on motion detection inside the Eve Cam to trigger exterior lights. In this situation, I would recommend something like the Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor since it can be located outside.
Overall, if you want to use the Standby Camera outside, you can certainly put it in a window seal and get a pretty good idea of what’s going on outside without a complicated installation process.
