Google Pixel Foldable coming in 2022: new leaks and release date

Since the initial leaks in 2020, techs have been eagerly awaiting the Google Pixel Foldable device. Previously, Google Pixel Fold was scheduled to launch in 2021 alongside Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. However, there was no sign of this at the launch event.

Now, leaks suggest that the search engine giant’s foldable device will arrive sometime in 2022 and may not feature the same camera upgrades as the latest Pixel line.

Google is said to have major plans for the device and has already started working on it under two project code names. They also announced a mid-cycle Android update focused on tablets and foldables.

There are a lot of leaks, rumors, and some reliable information about Google’s highly anticipated foldable. We’ve put it all together here. Check it out for a preview of what Pixel Fold will look like.

Google Pixel Foldable – Name and Release Date Rumored

According to previous leaks, Google named two projects – “Passport” and “Jumbojack”. Both are said to be dedicated to the Google Pixel Foldable which will supposedly be called “Google Pixel Fold”.

Now, a new camera app benchmark has hinted at another projected codename “Pipit” which is also based on a foldable Google tablet. Passport is said to be very similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 while Jumbojack is like Flip 3.

There were strong rumors that the Pixel Fold would arrive during the Google Pixel 6 event. However, it all turned out to be in vain and now we have new rumors on the release date. The new updates claim that Google Pixel Fold will arrive in March 2022, and it seems justified.

Google also announced Android 12L which is a mid-cycle update for Android focusing on tablets, foldables, and devices with a larger screen. It should also arrive next year. We believe Android 12L and Pixel Fold could unite.

Another clue was found in the code of the Google Camera app that says “isPixel2022Foldable”. It could be a real signal or just a funny reference from a developer.

Google Pixel Fold Specifications, Features and Camera

According to code spotted in a beta of Android 12, Google Pixel Fold could have the same model as the Pixel 6 line. This means it could feature the same chipset as the latest line, which is the Google Tensor.

However, Google has a lot of options when it comes to processors. They can also use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 on their foldable device, as the Galaxy Z Fold 2 uses Snapdragon 865+, which was the most powerful processor at the time of its release.

When it comes to cameras, you would expect a Pixel device to have some outstanding cameras. However, Google Pixel Fold won’t feature the same great cameras as the latest Pixel devices, and it’s common for a foldable to have an average lens.

New rumors suggest that Pixel Fold will only have a single 12MP rear camera and two 8MP front-facing cameras. The single 12 MP sensor could be the same one available in Google Pixel 3. Google will need to focus on its software powers to ensure great capture capabilities.

Design and display of Google Pixel Fold

The design of Google Pixel Fold should be very much related to the Galaxy S22. Google also ordered about 7.6-inch foldable OLED panels from Samsung. I agree that we’ve heard this rumor a few times now, but it still seems to be true.

Pixel Fold could be the same size as the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and it measures around 7.6 inches. However, the design could also be similar to that of the Galaxy Z Flip. Google has two foldable phone patents that feature a clamshell design and a two-hinged Z-shape, respectively.

Google has another patent, as reported by Patently Mobile, which shows a screen that opens to the size of a tablet and can be stretched a bit more. It looks a lot like a roll up phone concept. However, we don’t think that could be the concept Google is following in its first foldable phone.

All of this suggests that Google is experimenting with several designs and overlays when developing Pixel Fold. But, it is not certain that it will be finalized at this time.

Foldable Google Pixel expected price

Flip flops and folds are known to be expensive. So, Google Pixel Fold will not be a budget device. Currently, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the most expensive foldable available for $ 1,799.

Other folds are also available in the price range of $ 999 to $ 1399. This suggests that the Pixel Fold could cost between $ 1,199 and $ 1,599, as Google will seek to price it below the price of Samsung’s latest foldables.

That’s all we know about the Google Pixel Fold so far. Much of this is based on rumors from various leakers, code leaks, and Google’s patent filing. Google has yet to provide any official updates.

However, one thing is for sure, Google is definitely offering a revolutionary foldable device in the Pixel series. Hope it arrives soon.
