HBO writer and hip-hop artist Chris Gabo explains what it’s like to be a multimedia artist

Currently under contract with HBO, Hip Hop writer and artist Chris Gabo has written six episodes for the recently aired reboot of Processing. In all six episodes of season four, Gabo created the character of “Eladio” played by Anthony Ramos. It’s a very personal story for Chris.

After spending six more months in a writing studio for a miniseries based on Bong Joon Ho’s film “Parasite” produced by Adam McKay, Gabo acted as a consultant producer for The Weeknd’s show “The Idol”. Now Gabo just sold an original pilot to HBO set in his hometown of Tampa, Florida.

Originally a rapper and playwright, his focus began to shift while in college as the storytelling landscape entered a new phase that many refer to as the “golden age” of television. Eventually, Chris would begin to see television as the realm in which all of his favorite writing, games, and accomplishments took place.

Since then, Gabo’s work has been recognized by the Sundance MENA Theater Lab, the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference and more.

Now the biggest challenge he faces as a screenwriter is retaining fatherhood and autonomy. And the challenges vary from writing drama to television to film. While dramatic writing doesn’t provide the most “stable” compensation, they do what they can to stay true to the writer’s vision for the screenplay.

It is the opposite with cinema and television. In Film / TV, they’ll pay a generous amount including perks, but take an entire creative agency to produce a product the writer will likely never see until it airs.

While considering getting more creative agency as a director / producer one day, Chris is also recording as a successful Hip Hop artist. He opened for Ana Tijoux and DJ Rob Swift, while licensing music to Hulu’s Big city as well as the independent film Cold water. His prolific writing abilities prove to be a perfect fit for the confident delivery and lyricism of Hip Hop.

Eventually, he hopes to merge his two worlds, but authenticity and honestyyou are his first priority, so anything that manifests, will be 100% true to who he is as a dreamer and versatile media artist; we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!
